Greigii Tulip Red Riding Hood
T1190
Description
Swathed in a cloak of striking scarlet petals, the buds of ‘Red Riding Hood’ gradually open to reveal a jet-black centre. A particularly mesmerising variety on account of the clearly defined, dark burgundy stripes covering the stout foliage which enhance the resplendent blooms above. Like the girl from the fairy-tale, ‘Red Riding Hood’ is petite and plucky, a brilliant statement for container displays and for planting in front of taller varieties within your borders. This dwarf variety has been granted the accolade of an RHS Award of Garden Merit for its outstanding quality, reliability, and vigour.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
