Gloriosa Rothschildiana
M6242
Description
The 2nd Baron Rothschild, credited with bringing this eye-catching bloom from Africa, was an unconventional character famed for harnessing four zebras to a carriage and driving them to Buckingham Palace.
Gloriosa ‘Rothschildiana’ is as eccentric and extraordinary as its namesake. Otherwise known as the ‘Flame Lily’, this supremely popular variety is fiery scarlet, edged by a flicker of yellow. The elongated, crimped petals curve dramatically backwards, revealing lime green stamens which stretch out beneath.
This tropical, tendrilled vine will quickly clamber up a support to create a spectacular summer display for a sunny position, glasshouse, or conservatory.
Care Guide
Exotic Gloriosa Lilies are best started off indoors in spring.
Plant the rhizome on its side, just under the surface of good quality potting soil in a container with suitable drainage holes.
Keep in a warm place and provide consistent watering to ensure the soil stays moderately moist. Avoid touching the growing points and sprouts.
Flowers appear early on and once blooming starts in summer, pots can be transferred outdoors into a warm and sunny, sheltered site.
Robust vines climb to impressive heights of 100-240cm bearing show-stopping, flame-like blooms in July-September.
Bulbs will need to be lifted and stored during dormancy in the winter months as they are not frost hardy.
