Mirablis Jalapa
M6521
Description
With a name from the Latin meaning ‘amazing’ and commonly called the ‘Marvel of Peru’, it is little wonder Mirabilis ‘Jalapa’ is so fascinating. Remarkably, many different coloured flowers are simultaneously produced on the same bushy plant. The buds unfurl from late afternoon onwards, earning this variety the nickname ‘Four O’clock Flower’. The blooms radiate a heady, sweet fragrance, much like Nicotiana, proving irresistible to nocturnal pollinators. Kept frost free, Mirabilis is robust and vigorous, making it an ideal candidate for growing in patio containers and overwintering in the conservatory for an increasingly impressive display each year.
Care Guide
Mirabilis grow best in moist, well-drained, fertile soil in full sun. Plant the tubers vertically, 2.5cm deep and 30cm apart in the ground.
Can be planted outside in late April, or started off indoors, in pots in early spring before planting outside in May.
This half-hardy perennial, known as the Four O’clock plant will quickly produce bushy foliage and colourful flowers in June.
Provide consistent watering, ensuring the soil stays moderately moist throughout the growing season.
Cut stems back to ground level in autumn, before applying a thick mulch in mild regions. Elsewhere, the tubers must be lifted, stored over winter and planted again the following spring.
