Description

The graceful pillars of Galtonia ‘Candicans’ extend skywards like a magnificent Cathedral spire, giving this bloom its common name of ‘Spire Lily’. ‘Candicans’ is derived from the Latin meaning ‘shining white’ and the long stems live up to their name, gleaming with pearly, bell-shaped flowers. Radiating a light scent, Galtonia is packed with sweet nectar, proving irresistible to pollinators. Native to South Africa, these bulbs are nonetheless hardy and robust, thriving in container displays and naturalising amongst borders and lawns. The RHS has presented this variety with a coveted Award of Garden Merit, proving its excellent performance and reliability.

Care Guide

A warm, sunny position is essential for Galtonia to thrive.

Space bulbs 30cm apart, planting them 10-15cm deep in well-drained, humus-rich soil in early spring.  The bulbs can also be grown in large pots for a handsome, stately late-summer display.

Provide consistent watering, ensuring the soil stays moderately moist during the growing season.

After flowering, cut down spent stems once withered and mulch the crowns for winter protection.  In areas with severe winters, lift and pot-up the bulbs, storing them in a frost-free place until next spring.
