Tulip Species Honky Honk
T1033
Description
Like the lively country music of the same name, ‘Honky Tonk’ is an upbeat, sprightly tulip to put a spring in your step. Flutes of cheerful yellow blooms are blushed with soft pink, opening in the warmth of spring sunshine, and closing to a neat point by night. This Species variety multiplies well and is ideal for naturalising amongst grass, with its green-blue foliage featuring a delicately waved edge. A compact habit means these blooms are equally suited to brightening containers and edging borders. The RHS have honoured ‘Honky Tonk’ with an Award of Garden Merit, the seal of approval for garden performance.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
