Achimenes Mixed
M5066
Description
Fill summer containers, hanging baskets and window-boxes with this delightful mixture of colourful Achimenes which will flower from late spring until late autumn.
A profusion of open-faced blooms, resembling petunias crossed with violets, covers the mounded foliage which will cascade over the brim of your pots. The collection includes bold red-orange and purple varieties along with softer pinks and crisp whites.
Free flowering and fast growing, Achimenes belong to the same family as African Violets and Gloxinias. Originating from sunny South and Central America, they are tender rhizomatous perennials which need protection from frost and are often grown as houseplants.
Care Guide
Achimenes are low-maintenance perennials, perfect for summer hanging baskets and containers. They are native to Central and South America and are related to African Violets and Gloxinias. For thriving plants, choose a bright, partially shaded location with well-drained soil. Plant tubers 5cm deep and 10cm apart. Ensure soil is consistently moist but not waterlogged and feed with a high potash fertiliser every 10 days during the flowering season (usually May - September). Expect dainty stems to reach 15-30cm in height. Admire a continuous profusion of charming, vibrant blooms, each measuring 3-5cm in diameter, over the summer. Once flowering has finished, remove old growth, lift and overwinter tubers in dry compost in a frost-free place.
