Gladioli Purple Flora
G4539
Description
The opulent, royal-purple spires of gladioli ‘Purple Flora’ create a show-stopping, luxurious summer display when they bloom from July onwards. Large velvet blooms are clustered along tall, spiked stems, opening from the base upwards.
For a long succession of flowers, plant the corms over a period of several weeks during spring.
Traditionally used to add colour and texture to a busy cottage garden scheme, gladioli are also well-suited to more simple, modern gardens. Plant near the back of a border or large container with more airy plants at the forefront.
Care Guide
To cultivate Gladioli, choose a sunny site with well-drained, well-manured garden soil. Dig a trench 15cm deep and place the corms 10-15cm apart, covering with soil and ensuring they sit 5cm below the surface. Water regularly, maintaining soil moisture until growth is established, and during hot, dry spells of weather. Stagger planting at two-week intervals to ensure continuous flowering over a long period. Expect stately, colourful spikes reaching 60-90cm in height which many require staking for support. The smaller variety ‘Glamini’ Gladioli will reach a maximum height of 50cm.
