An arresting, exceptionally fine Bearded Iris, ‘Sable’ is among the best of the dark-coloured varieties. Particularly large, ruffled blooms exhibit lustrous violet standards above deep, ebony-purple falls with a velvety sheen. The glossy aubergine petals are highlighted by a soft, orange-tipped ‘beard’, ushering pollinators in to sample the plentiful pollen. The remarkably tall stems are replete with pointed buds, opening sequentially for a long-lasting display. Flowering from late spring onwards, the surrounding semi-evergreen, architectural foliage further extends the season of interest. The rhizomes of this sought-after, vigorous variety readily increase into sizeable clumps, improving the show year after year.
