Darwin Tulip Olympic Flame
T1560
Description
Blazing with glorious colour, the deep yellow petals of ‘Olympic Flame’ flicker with crimson streaks. The real Olympic flame is a symbol of strength, resilience, and the advancement of human civilisation, kept alight for the entirety of the games. Likewise, this eponymous tulip is robust and long-lasting, and can be used to great dramatic effect. The colossal, bi-coloured blooms are carried on sturdy stems, held aloft like the Olympic torch itself. ‘Olympic Flame’ has been bestowed with the horticultural equivalent of a gold medal – the RHS Award of Garden Merit – and will stand on the podium of your garden with pride.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
