Description

A distinguished tulip for the late spring garden, ‘Black Parrot’ dramatically flaunts feathered, undulating petals of velvety rich-maroon as it unfolds.

Tall stems make this RHS award-winning tulip perfect for cutting.  The handsome blooms are long-lasting both in the garden and in the vase, twisting, curling and lightening to a swirling palette of plum shades as it opens and develops.

The dark, beautifully laciniated flowers look even more striking planted next to more simple-shaped tulips, either in similar tones or contrasting colours.  We love it brushing up against the fragrant orange, lily-flowering tulip ‘Ballerina’.

Care Guide

November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
