Tulip Species Tarda
T1010
Description
One of the most prolific Species tulips, ‘Tarda’ teems with a throng of joyous, star-shaped blooms. Featuring a broad centre of cheerful, primrose yellow, each petal is tipped with pristine white. The undersides of the plump buds are painted with delicate strokes of mauve, sepia and green – best appreciated when backlit by the morning sun. Flowering freely with up to 6 heads per stem, these botanical tulips put on an exuberant show, brightening borders, lawns, rockeries, pots. ‘Tarda’ is wonderfully reliable and perennial, naturalising and self-seeding happily, and has consequently been granted the accolade of an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
