Greigii Tulip Toronto
T1191
Description
A highly unusual, curious shade of jasper-red tinged with shades of vermillion and bronze, ‘Toronto’ an early bloomer to captivate and enthral. With up to 3 flowers on each stem, these tremendous tulips expand in the warmth of the sun to form a delightful star shape and exhibit a charcoal grey centre. Decorative foliage completes the spectacle, with aubergine purple flecks mottling each dark green leaf. Compact and floriferous, ‘Toronto’ is an excellent choice for window boxes, pots, containers and for enhancing the front of your borders. The RHS has honoured this dependable, prolific Greigii Hybrid with the sought-after Award of Garden Merit.
Care Guide
November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
