Description

Topped by a head of gleaming, coppery, auburn locks, the glorious blooms of ‘Princess Irene’ will be the crowning glory to your spring garden. This fiery redhead ignites borders and container displays with the warming, amber hues of glowing embers. Each multi-tonal petal flickers with flashes of rust, burgundy and burnished bronze, enhanced by a background of blue-green foliage. Sturdy stems and a robust nature make this tulip suitable for exposed positions. The vigour and reliability of ‘Princess Irene’ have earnt this variety the accolade of an acclaimed RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Care Guide

November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
