Description

A rich, deep-plum tulip, perfect for the jewel garden.  Tulip ‘Merlot’ blooms wide open in full sun, unfolding up its star-shaped, luxurious violet flowers to expose powdery anthers and a pale-lemon pistil to passing bees and pollinators.

This lavish, lily-flowered tulip blooms on tall stems, adding grace and structure to borders and pots during May.

Combine with vivid tulips of differing shapes both in the garden and in the vase for a colourful, textural spring blend.

Care Guide

November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
