Description

With petals the colour of deep red-wine, in countless overlapping layers, the velvety double-blooms of tulip ‘Uncle Tom’ are a joy to behold when they flower in late spring.

This sumptuous paeony-flowering tulip is excellent for tasteful spring pot displays, holding onto classy looks and rich hues as it blooms for weeks.

Tulip ‘Uncle Tom’ looks as stunning planted by itself as it does mixed with complimentary gemstone colours.  Combine with opulent violet tulip ‘Blue Diamond’ and elegant lily-flowering ‘Merlot’ for a luxuriant textural display.

Care Guide

November is the optimum month for planting Tulip bulbs. The cooler late-autumn temperatures help to keep disease at bay, whilst still allowing time for your bulbs to put roots down before spring. Any well-drained, fertile soil is perfect for Tulips, ideally in full sun or part shade. Plant the bulbs 10-20cm deep, spaced 10-20cm apart. A piece of chicken wire or mesh can be placed on top of the soil or pots after planting if squirrels or rodents are a problem in your area. After flowering in March to May, remove withered stems, foliage and any fallen petals to promote good plant health and apply a top dressing of high-potash fertiliser in late winter.
